App Store and Google Play screenshot sizes, and how to make them

App Store and Google Play screenshot sizes, and how to make them

The App Store requires iPhone screenshots for the 6.1-inch display (1206 × 2622 or 1179 × 2556 pixels, portrait), plus 13-inch iPad screenshots (2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732) if the app runs on iPad. Google Play needs at least two screenshots of 320 to 3,840 pixels and recommends four at 1080 × 1920.

What screenshot sizes does the App Store require?

Apple accepts 1 to 10 screenshots per display size, as JPEG or PNG without transparency. Only some sizes are required; the rest are scaled from them. The sizes below are from Apple's screenshot specifications (October 2026):

  • iPhone 6.1-inch (Dynamic Island, required): 1206 × 2622 or 1179 × 2556 portrait.
  • iPhone 6.9-inch (optional): 1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736 portrait.
  • iPhone 6.5-inch: 1284 × 2778 or 1242 × 2688 portrait, required only if you give no 6.9-inch set.
  • iPad 13-inch (required if the app runs on iPad): 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 portrait.
  • iPhone Duo (optional now): 1398 × 2034 for the outer screen and 2007 × 2853 for the inner one. Apple plans to require the outer size from April 2027 for apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later.

Landscape sizes are the same numbers swapped. Always check the current list in App Store Connect before you export: Apple adds sizes with new devices.

What screenshot sizes does Google Play require?

Google Play is less strict about exact sizes and stricter about proportions. From the Play Console help:

  • At least 2 screenshots in total, up to 8 per device type.
  • JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no transparency.
  • Each side between 320 and 3,840 pixels, and the long side no more than twice the short side.
  • To be eligible for promotion, at least 4 screenshots at 1080 pixels or more: 1080 × 1920 portrait (9:16) or 1920 × 1080 landscape (16:9).
  • Tablets and Chromebooks: at least 4 screenshots, 1,080 to 7,680 pixels, 16:9 or 9:16.
  • Feature graphic: 1024 × 500, required to publish the listing.

Should store screenshots show a device frame?

For Google Play, mostly no: Google recommends real app footage rather than images of a device being held, keeping captions under 20% of the image, and putting the main UI in the first three screenshots. On the App Store many apps put the UI inside a phone frame with a short caption above it, which works as long as the app's own interface is the focus. Device mockups earn their place elsewhere around the listing:

  • the Google Play feature graphic (1024 × 500);
  • the app's landing page, press kit and launch posts;
  • Product Hunt, Dribbble and social images, where a phone in a real setting reads better than a flat screen.

How do you make App Store and Google Play screenshots?

Capture first, design second. A workable order:

  1. Capture clean screens on the largest required device (the iPhone simulator or a real phone), with real-looking content and the status bar tidied.
  2. Plan the set as a story: the first three screens carry the main value, because many people never swipe further.
  3. Add a short caption to each, a few words that say what the screen does.
  4. Export at exact sizes: the 6.1-inch iPhone set, the 13-inch iPad set if needed, and 1080 × 1920 for Google Play.
  5. Make the marketing images around the listing with device mockups: put the same screens on an iPhone, iPad or Android scene in the online mockup generator, or select the frames in Figma and use the Mockup plugin.

FAQ

How many screenshots should I upload?

Apple allows up to 10 per display size and Google Play up to 8 per device type. Most apps use 5 to 8, with the strongest three first.

Can I use the same screenshots for iPhone and Android?

The proportions differ, so export each set separately: iPhone screens are about 9:19.5, while Google Play recommends 9:16 for promotion.

Can screenshots have transparency?

No. Both stores reject images with an alpha channel. Export JPEG, or PNG without transparency.

What is a mockup, and do I need one for my listing?

A mockup places your screens on a real-looking device. Store screenshots themselves should focus on the UI; mockups are for the images around the listing. More in What is a mockup?
