What is a smart object in Photoshop? How mockups use it
A smart object in Photoshop is a layer that keeps its original content inside it, so you can scale, rotate, warp and filter it without losing quality and still change it later. Mockups are built around smart objects: you open the placeholder layer, paste your design, save, and the design appears in the scene with the right perspective and lighting.
Why use a smart object instead of a normal layer?
A smart object protects the original. A normal pixel layer loses detail every time you shrink, enlarge or distort it. A smart object remembers the source, so a logo scaled down to 20% and back up to 100% stays sharp, and a filter applied to it stays editable as a smart filter.
- Non-destructive transforms: scale, rotate, skew, perspective and warp without damaging the source.
- Editable filters: a blur or sharpen on a smart object can be changed or switched off later.
- One source, many places: duplicate a smart object and edit the contents once to update every copy.
How do you convert a layer to a smart object?
Select the layer (or several layers) and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. You can also right-click the layer in the Layers panel and pick Convert to Smart Object. Several layers selected together become one smart object.
How do you edit a smart object?
Double-click the smart object's thumbnail in the Layers panel, or choose Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents. The contents open as a separate document. Make your changes, save, close it, and the main document updates. To swap the contents for another file entirely, use Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents: Adobe notes that any scaling, warping or effects you applied are kept.
How do mockups use smart objects?
In a PSD mockup the place for your design is a smart object that already carries the perspective, the curve of a bottle or the bend of a page. You only change what is inside it:
- Open the mockup PSD and find the layer marked for your design (often named "Your design" or "Place your design here").
- Double-click its thumbnail. The placeholder opens in its own window, at the size the scene expects.
- Paste or place your design, fit it to the canvas, save and close.
- The scene updates: your design now follows the surface, with the scene's shadows and highlights on top.
Why does Photoshop say a smart object is not directly editable?
Because pixel tools do not work on a smart object layer. Painting, erasing, dodging, burning and cloning need pixels, and a smart object holds a protected source instead. You have three ways around it:
- Edit the contents (double-click the thumbnail) and paint inside them.
- Add a new empty layer above the smart object and paint there.
- Rasterize it with Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object. This turns it back into a normal layer, and the non-destructive benefits are gone.
What is the difference between embedded and linked smart objects?
An embedded smart object stores its contents inside the PSD, so the file is self-contained. A linked smart object points to a file on your disk and updates when that file changes, which keeps the PSD smaller and lets several documents share one source. Use File > Place Embedded or File > Place Linked to choose. Mockups use embedded smart objects, so the file works on any computer.
Do you need to know about smart objects to make a mockup?
No. Every ls.graphics mockup comes in two ways. The layered PSD has smart objects for Photoshop (it also opens in Photopea and Affinity Designer), for designers who want full control. The same scenes open in the online mockup generator, where you drop or paste your design straight onto the scene in the browser and export, with no smart objects, no Photoshop and nothing to install. Figma users can do the same with the Mockup plugin for Figma.

FAQ
Can you open smart objects without Photoshop?
Photopea, a free browser editor, opens PSD files with smart objects and lets you edit their contents. Affinity Designer opens layered PSD files too.
Why is my design blurry inside a mockup?
Your design is smaller than the smart object's canvas. Open the contents and check the canvas size, then export your design at that size or larger.
How do I undo a smart object?
Rasterize it (Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object) to turn it into a normal layer, or right-click it and choose Convert to Layers in recent Photoshop versions to get the original layers back.
Can I put a video in a smart object?
Yes, Photoshop can place a video file as a smart object on a timeline. For screen videos on device mockups, an online editor that exports MP4 or WebM is usually quicker.
